Gymnasio Municipal de Ipamery: a iniciativa particular para o ensino secundário no interior de Goiás (1933-1946)

Abstract

The work has as its object the Gymnasio Municipal de Ipamery and its operation between the years 1933 to 1946, for the delimitation of the studied period, the year of its creation and its encampment by the state of Goiás was taken into account. It is linked to the line of research, Educational Policies, History of Education and (auto)biographical research of the Graduate Program in Education at the Federal University of Catalão. We seek to answer how the creation of the Gymnasio reflected the relations between the government and society in the provision of secondary education in the interior of Goiás, in order to understand the configuration and organization of secondary education in Goiás in the 1930s and 1940s, analyzing then the relations between the public power in its municipal, state and federal spheres, as well as the private initiative in the creation and operation of the Gymnasio Municipal de Ipamery. The methodology used was documentary research carried out in the Municipal Library of Ipameri- GO, and in the archives of the Gymnasio Municipal de Ipamery, as well as bibliographic research related to the history of national and state education, with emphasis on secondary education in the Vargas Era. We conducted a theoretical-methodological dialogue with researchers such as Barros (2012), Haidar (2008), Horta (2012), Nagle (1974), Nepomuceno (1994), Pandolfi (2019), Rocha (2000), Schwarcz and Starling (2018), Veiga (1968). The documents analyzed point out that the creation of the Gymnasio is associated with the socioeconomic development of Ipameri-GO, driven by the arrival of electricity and the railroad in 1913, events that boosted the demands of sectors of local society for the provision of education. secondary school in the city, requiring support from the municipal government for its creation and, from the state, the interference with the Department of Secondary Education for the officialization of the institution in February 1933. The conclusions of the study are that the state and municipal governments supported the creation and functioning of the Gymnasio significantly, while the federal sphere limited itself to allowing its constitution, inspecting if it complied with the established norms and rules, even punishing when the institution did not comply with its criteria and rules.
