Abstract

This research is linked to the line of research Educational Policies, History of Education and (auto)biographical research, of the Postgraduate Program Scrito Sensu in Education at the Federal University of Catalão, having as its object of study Vocational Education in Brazilian prisons. Here we seek to promote the debate about education aimed at young people and adults who are incarcerated, and how much this type of education can contribute to the process of social reintegration of the individual. The position that we developed proved to be relevant due to the importance of the social reintegration of the incarcerated, since it is not enough for the State to exclude the convicts from social life, but rather to reinsert them into society. We glimpse the problem of prison education and the discourse implemented by the State around the return of the condemned individual to social life, made until then by a process of training to which incarcerated individuals are subjected within the prison. In fact, the central question is about the important role of education within the prison environment, with an emphasis on vocational education. This research was based on the bibliographic and documentary perspective, and the data pointed to the fact that teaching in prisons greatly collaborate with the entire process of reintegration of inmates, bringing significant changes to the prison population and to society in general.
