Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic was identified in Brazil in February 2020. From then on hospital employees began a long journey aimed at saving people's lives but at the same time lives began to be affected both in the physical and in the mental. This research aimed to: characterize presenteeism and the work ability index in hospital employees. Method: Cross-sectional and quantitative study, carried out with 79 workers from a hospital unit, in a municipality in the state of Goiás. For data collection the Stanford Presenteeism Scale SPS-6 and the Work Ability Index were used. Results: the following predominate: females with 79.74%, married or living with a partner 49.35%; regarding education, 31.64% have a postgraduate degree; the metric of greater work activity is 60.74% among professionals in direct contact with patients; 62.02% do not work in alternate shifts, having a fixed work schedule and 79.94% are direct employees of the hospital. Of the male employees, 31.3% showed a decrease in performance for work, while 68.8% showed greater performance for work. As for females, 9.5% showed a drop in performance, while 90.5% showed higher performance. In the analysis of the socio-demographic factors related to presenteeism the test of significance against the personal, social and work variables showed significance in the high performance for their work activities, being the female gender (p=0.025) when compared to the male gender therefore considering that males are more presenteeistic when compared to females. As for the analysis of work ability in the analysis of the general categorization for work ability, 50.63% of the evaluated hospital employees have good work ability. As for the analysis of labor factors, the significance test was significant (p=0.003) according to Fisher test for work demands whether physical or mental. Conclusion: Although we have evidence that, in isolation, there is worker illness both due to presenteeism and reduced work capacity, the present study did not show a relationship between the two variables, which demonstrates the need for further studies on the subject.
