Resumo

The constant changes made by humans in the environment have led to the degradation of biomes, the scarcity of natural resources in Brazil and around the world, generating negative consequences on a global scale. Thus, a major challenge of education for the twenty-first century is an urgent need to educate citizens to become committed to environmental issues and prepared to understand and adapt to changes which are indispensable for the constitution of a society that is sensitive to environmental preservation. The aim of this study is to investigate how environmental education has been approached in the Geography subject in Elementary Education in two county schools of Uberaba – MG. This study also aims to research what Geography teachers understand by environment and Environment Education as well as how these professionals have been incorporating this topic to everyday classes. This study also seeks to understand how students of the initial and final grades of Secondary School perceive environmental problems in the neighborhood where they live, how these problems affect their quality of life and what they understand by environment. We hope this study enables a reflection about the practice of Environmental Education in Elementary Education in order to suggest improvements in the teaching of Geography when it comes to environmental issues.
