Abstract

The progress of cities is linked to a series of factors encompassing growth policies, in addition to enterprises that contribute to the movement of vehicles and people. The projects that stimulate the construction of residential, commercial and higher education institutions play a key role in this process. These enterprises, called Traffic Generating Poles (PGTs) have a significant effect on the region where they are installed. They can generate social benefits, such as access to services and educational opportunities, as well as impacts on traffic in the region where they are located, such as congestion. In this context, the present work used the queuing theory method to verify the traffic flow as an impact measure on the avenue where the Federal University of Catalão (UFCAT) is located, considered an important PGT of the region. The study was carried out in the intersection near UFCAT where a signal is installed, analyzing the performance of the system, intervals of greater demand. The use of queue theory is a valuable tool to evaluate the operational efficiency of the system, such as traffic density at intersections, the average number of vehicles waiting to be served, the waiting time of a vehicle in the queue and other metrics that help determine if the intersection being analyzed is under control. Data collection was performed for the analysis of traffic flow on the road, verifying the statistical distribution suitable for the study and analyzing the parameters of queue performance using simulation tools. The results obtained were satisfactory with the reality analyzed at the intersection observed, because it was possible to verify that the performance of the route for the measured flow is adequate.
