Resumo
The poor performance in Calculus courses of the students of the courses of Math and Science
in the institutions of higher education has been a constant in the country. A significant number
of students accumulates one or more failures in their educational history, being this discipline
one of the drivers of student's evasion in higher education. In this present study, we intend to
investigate the origins of the problem and its relation to the absence of Calculus in basic
education, in particular, in high school. Here we will address the education trajectory along the
history of Brazil and its possible sequels in basic education and higher education, specifically
in the teaching of Calculus. In a systematic and critical analysis of the above-mentioned
assumptions, we conclude with a proposal that can be implemented despite all the historical
ills of Brazilian education.
