Resumo
The changes that occurred in the last decades in the Brazilian and world economy have
generated significant changes, such as the opening of new markets and the advance of
competition. These changes have impacted all productive sectors, both national and regional,
exposing the local economy to global competition. This dynamic of the environment causes
organizations to race for better levels of performance, being necessary the knowledge,
evaluation and creation of new alternatives to support competitiveness, both in the internal
and external market. Thus, the organization's strategy must be aligned in order to collaborate
for its performance in order to obtain better results. In the conjuncture of competitive
markets is also included cooperativism, even with its administrative structure differentiated
from non-cooperative companies. The inherent characteristics of this administrative system
mean that management needs to prepare even more to face the difficulties of competition,
besides the constant economic and fiscal changes. The purpose of this study was the
Cooperativa Agropecuária do Vale do Paracatu LTDA - COOPERVAP, located in the municipality
of Paracatu, in the northwest region of Minas Gerais. Currently this cooperative works with the
collection of milk, grain storage and milk derivatives production, in addition to having a
diversified portfolio of businesses such as: supermarket, gas station, veterinary and
pharmacy. Thus, both diversification of products and diversification of businesses, in this way,
it becomes important to study this diversification strategy to identify its interference in the
financial performance of this cooperative, which leads to the following research problem:
"How to implementation of the diversification strategy of the Cooperativa Agropecuária do
Vale do Paracatu - COOPERVAP affected its financial performance from 1982 to 2016? " This
study is based on research guidelines presented in the literature, where it was chosen as a
study technique using the qualitative research approach, through a Case Study, exploratory
and descriptive, theoretical-empirical and ex-post facto. Regarding temporality and space, the
study is classified as a cross-sectional study with a longitudinal perspective. Data were
collected in a primary and secondary manner. The primary research was conducted from
semi-structured interviews with a group of fifteen people among managers, counselors,
consultants, cooperatives, executive superintendents, directors and coordinators. Secondary
research was developed through the collection of data and documentary analysis by searching
the archives of the institution researched, as well as external databases such as IBGE, OCB
and CEMIL websites. As a data analysis technique, we opted for content analysis that was
developed based on interviews and documents raised during the study. As a result of this
research, internal factors for the development of diversification identified the need for
economic survival, the need to meet the demands of the cooperative, and among external
factors are the demands of the consumer market in the Federal District, the economic
development of Paracatu demanded products and services and the establishment of a new
agricultural frontier in the Northwest region of Minas Gerais. The process of implementing the
diversification strategy by COOPERVAP did not happen in a planned way, but as a response to
changes in the market, the needs of the cooperative or the region where the cooperative is
installed. Throughout these years, COOPERVAP has developed a vast portfolio of businesses
and products, managing to diversify its sources of income and achieve financial stability that
allowed it to invest long term and respond to the needs of the cooperative. According to the
financial survey carried out, it is possible to identify that only after 2000 COOPERVAP acquired
capacity to discharge its debts in the short term. Previous to this, there are several
oscillations, with some peaks, but most of the years with liquidity indices below 1 in a process
of financial structuring. It was not the vain pretension to exhaust the discussions on the
subject, but rather to investigate the strategic action of COOPERVAP, adding important
information to the administrative system and thus promoting the possibility of increasing the
effectiveness of the decision-making process and the organizational development.
