A contribuição da Geografia escolar na formação para a cidadania: um estudo de caso acerca das concepções de jovens do ensino médio da cidade de São Paulo-SP

The present study points to considerations about the contribution of school geography to the training for the citizenship of high school students, considering the potential of Geography teaching and the student’s conceptions about the idea of citizenship. Therefore, the general objective was to understand the role of school geography in the training for the citizenship of high school youth in the city of São Paulo. It was also sought to characterize the conceptions that high school youth present about citizenship, as well as to draw a profile on these subjects enrolled in the schools collaborating in the research. In addition, it was identified how the content related to citizenship is presented in the textbooks and what is their contribution in the formation for citizenship, as well as the indication under which perspectives and under what emphasis, the content relative to citizenship has been discussed in school. In the same way, a documentary research was done from documents such as: Geography curricula of the state of São Paulo, political pedagogical projects of schools, projects applied in schools, textbooks and handouts used in schools. Concomitant to this search, this study had a long bibliographical survey that covered all the thematic axes involved and intertwined with one another: Geography teaching, high school, schoolchildren, and citizenship training. The field research began through observations in the school environment and later the geography classes in the chosen schools. This was followed by the application of questionnaires to young people duly enrolled in all the high school grades of the camp schools. Also part of the field research was the semi-structured interviews carried out with the teachers of Geography collaborators, in order to help outline the profile of the schoolchildren. Based on the analysis of the collected data, it was verified that, for the most part, young people have not presented a clear and concise conception about the idea of citizenship. That is, this concept has not been grasped in all its spheres - politics, environmental, cultural, economic and historical-social - in a balanced and democratic way. Committing, in this way, their daily practices in the city. From these findings, it was possible to make some notes regarding the teaching-learning process of these young people. Such proposals have as centrality, the use in the space and in the place as a didactic mediation in the formation for citizenship. Thus, based on the yearnings that guided the present research, the greatest justification for this study was the possibility of contributing to the trajectory of the teaching of Geography and, consequently, to the potential of the training for the citizenship of youngsters in school.
