Resumo
This dissertation entitled "The Gymnasium of Morrinhos - Goiás." (1936-1971): A Catholic institution for secondary
education, belongs to the current Research Line "Educational Policies, History of Education and (Auto)Biographic Research" of the
Goiás Federal University, Catalão Campus’ Masters Program in Education. It proposed the study of the “Ginásio Senador
Hermenegildo de Morais” School in Morrinhos (Goiás State). The purpose is to analyze the historical formation of the Gymnasium
during a long period begining in 1936, under the Francisco Campos Reform, until 1971, when the administrative format changes
with the establishment of the convention with the state government of Goiás motivated by Law 5.692, in addition to contextualizing
the institution as part of the Catholic Education movement in Brazil and in Goiás; Identify the relationship of the institution with the
church and local society in the provision of secondary education; And understand the organization, structuring and its functionality.
Idealized in the archbishopric of Dom Emanuel Gomes de Oliveira in Goiás, the projected institution was led by the congregation of
Stigmatines, which maintained the same institutional format during the period investigated. The school of secondary education was
inserted in the movement of Catholic Restoration that, among other strategies, sought to consolidate the Church's presence in
education, dedicating itself to the formation of laymen, as well as members of the clergy. In this regard, the creation and
administration of this confessional school, had a dual purpose, in addition to training young lay people in future leadership in society
and politics, also engaged in the preparation of internal staff, with priests acting as teachers. In the convergence of interests
between the Catholic Church and the local society, the institution set out to meet the demand for secondary education, mainly
directed at boys, expanding later to offer other courses and entrance exam preparations, prerogatives provided by the legislation at
the time. The historiographical research sought the theoretical dialogue with the following research areas: scholar institutions,
history of education and the church. The supporting research sources were based on records of memorialists, data of the official
websites of the Vatican and the Congregation of Stigmatines, official data of the IBGE, official data of the Chamber of Deputies,
official legislations; Documents found in the institution's own collection, specifically in the institution's books of enrollment, statute,
rules and regulations (1937 and 1943), inspection reports, time tables and faculty meeting minutes. The analysis of the documents
went through two complementary movements: a movement outside the Gymnasium, grasping contextual aspects, and another
internal characterizing the specific features of the institution in its historical, geographic and social context.
