Aprendizagens sobre o corpo: uma análise do documentário City of Joy (2016) sobre a violência contra as mulheres Congolesas

Abstract

City of joy, a documentary released by Netflix in 2018, presents the audience to a recovery center in the Democratic Republic of Congo that helps women who were sexually assaulted by members of the militias. This research analyses how the documentary depicts the armed conflicts all over the country and how the current events in the country affect Congolese women. The use of rape as a weapon of war is recurrent and it became a turf domination mechanism used by the militias sponsored by wealthy countries with capitalist ambitions. Considering the aforementioned topics, this work promotes a debate on neocolonialism, imperialism, and patriarchy, with the intention of comprehending the path City of joy sets in its narrative, and of discussing that it is noticeable in the documentary that Congolese women endure a learning process about their bodies and themselves through classes and activities in the City of Joy center, where they also receive proper medical care.
