Abstract
The present work has two objectives, the first is to theorize about the Epistolary Romance, rereading exemplary works from the 17th and 18th centuries. Cartas Portuguesas (1669), by Gabriel-Joseph de Guilleragues (Mariana Alcoforado), Cartas Persas (1721), by Montesquieu, Julia or the New Heloise (1761), by Rousseau, Dangerous Liaisons (1782), by Choderlos de Laclos, Pamela (1740) and Clarissa (1749), both by Richardson are the main works to be read and analyzed. In a second step, other works from the 19th century will be analyzed, such as Drácula (1897), by Bram Stoker, Frankenstein (1818), by Mary Shelley, The Color Purple (1982), by Alice Walker, which are considered epistolary works for most of the theorists and some national works produced between 1800 and 1980 in Brazil. In the second part, we analyze the work Sussuarões (1981) by Luiz Cruz de Oliveira in terms of identity, character, literary space and its framing in this novel model. We observed that Oliveira's novel shows the possibility of mixing novelistic forms. It brings literary language closer to cinematographic language, emphasizing the disguised setting and the approximation with cinema, however, despite presenting epistolary elements, it is not an epistolary novel. To support this research, the following theorists were used, such as Robert Adams Day (1966), Laurent Versini (1979), Jane Altman (1982), Genette (1995), Yves Giraud (1995), Jean Rousset (2000), Frederic Calas (2007) among others.
