Abstract
This dissertation presents a pioneering study within the research line on the characterization of heterogeneous materials through the homogenization technique, utilizing the Representative Volume Element (RVE) concept, applied to structural analysis via a hierarchical multiscale approach. Examples of composite and porous materials were used, and microstructure analyses were performed to understand the homogenized macroscopic properties of the materials. The RVE technique was employed to describe the microstructure of the materials and generate numerical models that represent the structure at different scales. The hierarchical multiscale approach made it possible to simulate the behavior of the structure at different scales, allowing for a more complete understanding of the material. The analysis was crucial to understanding the limitations and potential of the technique and to assess the behavior of complex structures formed by composite and porous materials. The results demonstrated that the hierarchical multiscale approach is capable of accurately describing material properties, providing a better understanding of macroscopic behavior through studies performed on the microstructure. This technique can be applied in several areas, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in physical and chemical processes in heterogeneous media.
