Abstract

Some non-destructive Structural Integrity Monitoring (SHM) techniques have improved their analysis in the last decades. Among them, the electromechanical impedance-based SHM (EMI-SHM) technique has been tested in several fields and associated with different statistical methodologies. Considering the nature of spatial variation of damage metric data along structures, the use of the indicator kriging method is proposed to predict the existence of three damage positions - central, lower left and right -, with these known positions being simulated as an aluminum plate. Maps showing the probability of the damage metric falling into several value thresholds were able to delineate the areas affected by the damage. Using the probability map based on extreme damage metric values, it was possible to predict the location of the damage. The geometric anisotropy observed in the semivariograms apparently indicates preferential directions of damage propagation. This approach proves to be viable, as it only uses the input damage metric data, and presents the ability to map areas affected by damage and their respective location.
